Senior Exhibitions are coming
Every year Steele Canyon Seniors present a Senior Exhibition to a panel of judges as one of their graduation requirements. Seniors give a 6-8 minute speech, using PowerPoint, and present the judges with their Portfolio, which includes reflections, work samples, resumŽ, and community service documentation. Exhibitions are the final assessment for speech competency and this year are being scheduled on April 29th and 30th.
The Senior Exhibition is beneficial because it provides a framework for students to evaluate their skills, interests, and goals. They must think about the significance of their personal and academic past and how it affects their future choices. Students go out into the world more prepared to make the most of college and more prepared for job interviews.
Highlights of Senior Exhibition requirements:
¥ Three main objectives that must be addressed: 1-reflection on academic experience, 2-reflection on non-academic meaningful experience, 3-planning for their future (career)
¥ Use of PowerPoint as a visual aid to support speech
¥ Community Service: 30 hours documented
¥ Supervisor signature and contact information on either a letter (preferred method) or on ÒCommunity Service LogÓ (*There is a change comingÑfuture seniors will NOT be permitted to use the log, so they must get official letters)
¥ If you are unsure if something counts as acceptable service, ask right away; do not wait until the last minute. Not every good deed is equivalent to community service. (*There is a change comingÑfuture seniors will be limited to counting a max of 10 hours from on-campus or school functions.)
¥ PORTFOLIO:
¥ Reflections & work samples: No surprises here, students have been writing reflections at the end of every class, so NO EXCUSES!
¥ Evidence of future plans: some sort of documentation that senior has researched and thoughtfully considered a career path. (*There is a change comingÑfuture seniors will be required to put a career plan in writing.)
¥ ResumŽ: If you donÕt know how to write one, use the instructions online or go to a workshop on campus.
Detailed instructions will available for download and print at schscougars.org coming in March. The changes noted do not apply to the Graduating Class of 2008, however there is some updated information available online. Seniors are responsible for the information in order to fulfill graduation requirements. Please encourage your student to get a start on things early, not to procrastinate! Tutorials will be held in March and April for help with any portion of exhibitionsÑpay attention to the bulletin and flyers for specific dates if you are interested in attending.
One last note, we are also seeking parents and community members to join teachers on the judging panels. It is a great experience and you can to see the depth of thought and growth in our students. Please contact Karen Rand (krand@guhsd.net or 660-3539) if you are interested or know someone who might be interested.
